  • World Series: Los Angeles Dodgers won 4 games to 1 over the Oakland Athletics.
  • NBA Finals: Los Angeles Lakers won 4 games to 3 over the Detroit Pistons.
  • NFL: Washington Redskins win their second Super Bowl title 42-10 over the Denver Broncos.
  • PGA Tour: the leading money winner for the year was Curtis Strange with $1,147,644.
  • NHL: Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup 4-0 over the Boston Bruins.
  • Tennis: Steffi Graf becomes only the third woman in history to win the Grand Slam in tennis.

Historical Notes:

  • January 1 - The Soviet Union begins its program of economic restructuring (perestroika) with legislation initiated by Premier Mikhail Gorbachev.
  • January 8 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average falls 140.58 points, or 6.85%, to close at 1,911.31 in a mini-crash.
  • February 13-February 28 - The 1988 Winter Olympics are held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
  • March 16 - Iran-Contra Affair: Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North and Vice Admiral John Poindexter are indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States.
  • May 31 - President Ronald Reagan addresses 600 Moscow State University students, during his visit to the Soviet Union.
  • August 20 - The Iran-Iraq war ends, with an estimated 1 million lives lost.
  • September 17-October 2 - The Summer Olympic Games are held in Seoul, South Korea.
  • September 29 - NASA resumes space shuttle flights, grounded after the Challenger disaster.
  • October 5 - Republican vice presidential nominee Senator Dan Quayle insists he has as much experience in government as John F. Kennedy did when he sought the presidency in 1960. Senator Lloyd Bentsen replies, "Senator, I knew Jack Kennedy. I served with Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."
  • November 8 - George H.W. Bush is elected over Michael Dukakis.
